Greetings, and welcome to the Visual Art and STEAM page at NSCS, Beverly Campus! My name is Kayla Chamberlain, I am so excited to be continuing the art program at our school, as well as introducing a STEAM centered approach to enrich our curriculum. This is my second year teaching, and second year at NSCS. I knew at a very young age that I wanted to be an art teacher, and now that I am living my "dream job", I absolutely love it! Learning is one of my favorite things to do, as well as playing sports, enjoying the great outdoors, serving in Youth Ministry, leading Bible studies, spending time with family and friends, and - of course - making art.
I was born and raised in Northern New Jersey, and have a twin brother and an older sister. In 2017, I graduated from Montclair State University summa cum laude with a BA in Art Education, with a concentration in Metalworking and Jewelry Making. Currently, I am attending Southern New Hampshire University, and if all goes to plan, I will be graduating in July of 2019 with a M.A.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Educational Leadership. My goals for this year involve building the art curriculum to be an even more engaging and interactive environment, where students are critically thinking and collaborating every time they step foot in my classroom. Also, I am hoping to further develop the technology at our school, increase parental and teacher collaboration, and integrate a STEAM curriculum more actively at NSCS. This website is part of this approach, and we hope that it will serve as a convenient and frequent platform to communicate and collaborate with our families and partners at NSCS. Please feel free to view the documents, announcements, and photographs that are posted! |
What is STEAM?
Steam is an acronym that stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. You might be familiar with the STEM initiative, which was introduced into education in the early 2000s to prepare students for jobs that involved science, technology, engineering, and math. Recently, it has been observed that these programs were missing components of creativity, innovation, and design - all of which are necessary for 21st century innovation and success. Due to these observations, individuals and organizations alike are championing the STEAM initiative, with the belief that the arts will supply the missing components necessary to prepare students for the future that they will live and work in.
